The Newton South School Council is an elected, advisory body composed of South parents, teachers, students, and administrators. The primary responsibilities of the Council are to assist Principal Joel Stembridge with:
The Council meets monthly during the school year in the faculty dining room. Agendas are posted in advance on this website. Meetings are open to the public and parents are invited to speak before the Council regarding school-wide issues. The Council does not address issues involving individual students.
School Councils are mandated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as part of the Education Reform Law of 1993.
- Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with the local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
- Identifying the education needs of students attending the school
- Reviewing the annual school budget
- Formulating a school improvement plan
- Reviewing the student handbook annually to consider changes in disciplinary policy
- Reviewing and, as requested by the principal, recommending courses of action regarding select proposed policies and programs
